CCC Developing AI Total Loss System for Shops

May 11, 2018

Insurers are using the CCC Smart Total Loss tool to analyze photos of vehicle damage and determine losses within seconds.

May 11, 2018—CCC Information Services is developing a shop-facing solution of the artificial intelligence Smart Total Loss tool, which insurance representatives have started to use.

The CCC Smart Total Loss tool was introduced to insurers in late 2017. The tool is an artificial intelligence claims solution that analyzes a single photo of vehicle damage and can determine total losses within seconds, said David Bliss, vice president of product management for CCC Information Services.

The system uses deep learning algorithms to help predict an effective appraisal method.

So far, insurers have reported that the tool helps them identify total losses earlier in the repair process, and save time and money through processes like unnecessary tows to repair shops, he said. Insurers can use the tool at a crash site because it is available through a mobile app.

“When carriers can predict vehicle status accurately, shops could experience reduced disruption caused by total loss vehicles towed to repair shops instead of directly to salvage yards,” Bliss said.

Within the next few months, CCC will offer the shop-facing solution to some shops to test it and begin gathering feedback.

Smart Total Loss is powered by the CCC ONE platform and the goal is for the design to be integrated into the workflow of more than 350 carriers and 24,000 shops that use the platform today, Bliss said.
